“Legacy and Lessons from the Cuyahoga River”
Jim White
Jim White retired in 2017 as the director of Sustainable Infrastructure programs of the Cleveland Cuyahoga Port Authority, concluding a 47-year award-winning career in environmental planning and management. In 2017, Mr. White was named “Champion of the River” by the Cuyahoga River Restoration Project. While director, Mr. White designed and placed in operation two river-cleaning boats, “Flotsam” and “Jetsam,” which have cleared the River of surface trash efficiently for the past eight years, and have been models for similar cleaning vessels nationally. Prior to serving the Port Authority, Mr. White was the River Navigator for the American Heritage River Program, where he was awarded the 2006 Ohio Lake Erie Award. Prior to that Mr. White served as Executive Director of the Cuyahoga River Community Planning Organization, where he directed the development of the Remedial Action Plan. Edith Chase was a member of the Advisory Board of that organization at that time.
Jim White is a native of Brecksville. He earned a Master’s Degree in Planning from the University of Virginia. He served in municipal and county government planning and management positions in Virginia, including County Administrator for Culpeper County, before returning home to the Cuyahoga Valley to apply his talent and skill to the Resurrection of the Cuyahoga River.
