City of Cleveland SOPEC Electric Aggregation Program Update

Rates currently an estimated 44 percent cheaper than The Illumination Company’s standard service offer rate with 100 percent renewable energy by default

August 31, 2023 — Cleveland — In June, the City of Cleveland joined the Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (SOPEC), a regional council of governments that works with Cleveland and other member communities across Ohio to secure a period of lower electricity rates for residents and small businesses.

Starting with the August 2023 meter-read date, eligible City of Cleveland residents and small businesses have been receiving electricity supply backed by 100 percent renewable energy at the new price of 6.302 cents per kWh, for a period of 12 months.

The SOPEC Electric Aggregation Program for the City of Cleveland not only features 100 percent renewable energy by default, but it is also an estimated 44 percent cheaper than the August Illuminating Company’s standard service offer (SSO), currently at 11.2742 cents per kWh (varies throughout the year).

The average Cleveland residential customer is estimated to save approximately $275 over the next 10-month period starting with the August 2023 meter-read date, compared to the average Illuminating Company's SSO, also referred to as ‘Price to Compare’ (PTC), over the same term. This translates to approximately $19.8 million in total combined savings for all participating residential and small business customers.

A small group of customers who were unable to be enrolled in the program with the August 2023 meter-read dates will receive an automatic one-time $25 credit on their September 2023 electricity bill due to the delay. This group of individuals will start the program with the September 2023 meter-read date.

If you are not currently enrolled in the SOPEC Electric Aggregation Program but would like to be, you can call the dedicated SOPEC enrollment number with SOPEC’s supplier, AEP Energy, at: 1-877-648-1937.
