Did you know you can take metal items to local area scrap yards? Check out this list of local resources.

These facilities take metals of all kinds! And, great news, most take aluminum and steel containers from residences. Before taking items to the scrap yard please make sure there is no remaining food, liquid or miscellaneous substances in the containers by thoroughly rinsing them out. Place the steel lids inside the cans as well since both can be recycled.

Check to see if the steel yard also accepts empty steel aerosol cans or empty steel paint cans. This is another great alternative to adding items to your trash, where they will only end up in the landfill. Additionally, scrap yards are regulated by the state. Residents will have their picture taken, all items inventoried and each person compensated for accepted material. Here is a list of a few we’ve found. Keep in mind there are many more and may be closer to you.
