The Robert L. Lewis Academy for Social Justice presents this symposium as a celebration of 10 successful years of empowering students in civic activism. This interactive event offers community members, faculty and students a rare opportunity to engage in a lively, real-life interchange on how we can rebuild our sense of community based on what we hold in common as human beings.

Morning Keynote:
The Dramatic Legacy of Robert Lewis
Stephanie Morrison Hrbek, former executive director and co-founder of the Near West Theatre. Which is a reflection of her commitment to living and serving in a richly diverse urban setting. She was also involved in the development of the Gordon Square Arts District (GSAD), where NWT is an anchor organization.

Luncheon Keynote:
Overcoming Barriers in the Path to Community Empowerment
Veronica Dahlberg, founder and executive director of HOLA, a grassroots Latino organization focusing on community organization, leadership development and civic engagement. Under Dahlberg’s direction, HOLA Ohio has received multiple honors including the Torchlight Prize — a national award recognizing work that empowers the Latino community — and the Distinguished Hispanic Ohioan Award from the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs.

Registration and Continental Breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the morning keynote.

Immediately following the morning presentation, there will be 17 breakout presentations in two sessions on important issues affecting our community such as Access to Clean Water, Universal Healthcare, LGBTQ Health Issues, Green New Deal, and Community Reentry and more. Participants can choose to attend one workshop in each session.

The sessions run from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 11:15 am – 12:15 p.m. Immediately following the breakout sessions, we will hear our afternoon keynote presentation during a delicious buffet lunch.
