City of Cleveland Climate Action Plan Update 2023-2024

A Message: City of Cleveland's Climate Action Plan Updates
Read: Press Release

The City of Cleveland Mayor’s Office of Sustainability is taking proactive steps to enhance our Climate Action Plans. Our commitment involves an extensive process of community assessments and engagement activities, aiming to incorporate valuable input from our residents, stakeholders, and experts. Follow us on our year-long journey as we work towards developing an even stronger Cleveland Climate Action Plan (CAP) and City of Cleveland operations-focused Municipal Action Plan (MAP).

Assessing Cleveland’s Climate Risk

Our journey kicks off with a critical assessment phase from October 2023 to November 2023 known as the Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA). During this time we will begin to gather information from both the public and subject matter experts to better understand which Cleveland communities are most likely to be impacted by climate change.

At the heart of our efforts is a dedication to creating a community where everyone, no matter their income, race, or ability, can enjoy a safe and healthy living environment. Our commitment extends beyond just preparing our city for climate change, we are passionate about ensuring this resilience is achieved with fairness. In recognition that climate change affects various communities differently, we encourage all Clevelanders to complete the CRVA survey. We want to hear about how climate change affects you and your community and how we can work together to build a more sustainable and equitable future for Cleveland.

Connecting with Our Communities

The next phase, running from October 2023 to April 2024, focuses on forging stronger connections with our communities. We will be collaborating with community organizations and city departments to engage residents and employees through an exciting series of outreach and educational initiatives. During this time we aim to engage every member of our community, especially those who have been historically overlooked or face barriers to participation. We believe that a sustainable and resilient future for Cleveland can only be achieved by involving everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Through a series of outreach and educational initiatives, we seek to create platforms that are accessible and inviting to all. Our goal is not only to educate residents and employees on the impacts of climate change but to also ensure that this engagement is reflective of a diverse and fair representation. We are committed to addressing the unique challenges faced by these communities, and your insights and experiences will guide us in tailoring our initiatives to best meet their needs.

Planning for Climate Action

From October 2023 through October 2024, we will immerse ourselves in the crucial planning and implementation phase. During this phase, we will analyze the invaluable input provided by our communities. This information will be fundamental in outlining key priorities to effectively address and adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. Through carefully structured listening sessions, accessible office hours, and an open invitation for public comments on the draft update of our climate action plans.

We aim to ensure that every community member, irrespective of background or circumstance, is an active participant in these discussions. By creating platforms that welcome and embrace all voices, we endeavor to craft strategies that resonate with the unique needs and aspirations of our community.
