Ninth Coast Guard District: Ensuring the safety, security and stewardship of our National Treasure
Rear Admiral June E. Ryan assumed duty as the Ninth Coast Guard District Commander in June 2015. She is the senior Coast Guard Commander for the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway, an area that encompasses eight states, a 1,500 mile international border, and a workforce of more than 6,000 Coast Guard active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary men and women.
The U.S. Coast Guard is the only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security that ischarged with protecting not only the marine transportation system and infrastructure; but also our natural and economic resources; and the territorial integrity of our nation – from both internal and external threats, natural and man-made. They protect these interests in U.S. ports, inland waterways, along the coasts, and on international waters.
Within the Ninth Coast Guard District, primary responsibilities include delivering multi-mission services in search and rescue, maritime safety and security, environmental protection, maritime law enforcement, aids to navigation and ice-breaking. What does the future of the great lakes look like to the stewards of the lakes?
